    Yup.

But maybe -- maybe -- their Cinepro software anticipates this issue and includes a method of converting it appropriately ...

The previous Black could do 4K, but at 15p. The new version of the chip that the GoPro uses - the 9 - is capable of 4K at 30p. I'd guess that they aren't using the new chip yet, just firmware, WiFi and packaging upgrades to generate more sales until the new chip gets cheap enough to use.

GoPro lost a competitor recently. Contour went bust, I read somewhere.

But how many people are just going to stick the mp4 files on their favorite NLE timeline and then find it all goes a bit Chuckle Brothers?

    Oh, yes - HERE

I hadn't heard -- but yes, they've shuttered the whole company it seems.

Sad -- they offered a decent product that had different and useful features compared to the GoPros.

Its tough being 2nd best, when the price differential is not too different -- while your marketing budget is much smaller...

It does the same 4K (15FPS), and 2.7K (30FPS) as its predecessor.

What have you heard about this chip -- are you saying that it was rumored to have a 4K 30FPS chip -- but they decided not to use it yet  ??

"4Kp15 and 2.7Kp30 enable ultra high-resolution, cinema quality capture."

What I'm reading is that this chip set is for the next iteration -- the GoPro4

"...The GoPro HD Hero 4 will be powered by the Ambarella A9 camera SoC, which, besides being able to film in 4K resolution at 30fps, will be able to record in ultra high framerate modes for HD and fullHD, namely 1080p at 120fps, and 720p at 240fps..."

    Re: GoPro cameras, etc. ...

Yes, so what's with the + versions? Just a cynical attempt to sell more cameras? I would have thought most GoPro enthusiasts will realise that the Full 4K version isn't that far away and save their money.

Maybe the new chip is still too expensive, maybe GoPro don't think the market is ready for Full 4K yet, or maybe the + does use the new chip but the 4K mode is yet to be unlocked.

    Re: GoPro cameras, etc. ...

The "+" version is smaller, lighter and uses less battery power. Now that Foxconn owns part of it, they have the manufacturing muscle to do this (they used to do all the iPhones and iPads).

While GoPro pushes the evolution of the POV camera market, I don't need to be on the bleeding edge. I can wait and see what will be around in June when I am back in the States. Here are a lot of Chinese cameras that while not doing 4k do almost everything as well for LOT less. And I mean a LOT less.

Having 4k would help, but in the end, my videos will still be 1080 with a mix of camcorder and dslr, which neither are 4k.

    Re: GoPro cameras, etc. ...

you're right Tony -- its kind of like Apple: incremental change on the odd year (5S), major change the subsequent year.

The Plus offers real enough improvement over the current Black (but maybe not the Silver).  Better WiFi would be a critically important differentiator for me.

But if I already owned a  black and Wifi connectivity was not an issue, I might not feel the need to upgrade.

    I'm not sure I will.

BTW -- you might want to check out a camera called the iON Air Pro 2 -- it might be of interest to you.

I've looked at the iON and many others, but THIS is pretty interesting! And priced under $100!!

good find Tony,  available for around $85 on ebay (coming from China).

The image quality is more than decent, and it comes with an amazing variety of mounts.

Spare batteries are available for $9 -- and it has a built in LCD monitoring screen (VERY useful).

Likely I'll eventually get one -- though its hard to justify given that I already own 3 GoPros (the last 3 versions).

I learnt from watching that lengthy review of the camera that it has one GIGANTIC idiotic design flaw:  there is NO way to power the camera up or off once its in the water tight case.

EVERY change -- turning it on,  turning it off -- requires taking it completely out of that protective case.

    Brainless !!!

    Re: GoPro cameras, etc. ...

If you read the YouTube comments, that has apparently been fixed in the latest version?

    Re: GoPro cameras, etc. ...

There is a new case for the camera. I forgot to add that. It has, I believe, 3 buttons on it.

The cost of this camera cheap. Almost a throw-a-way, that is why I have considered it.

Where have you seen an official pronouncement regarding the third power button ?? (beyond that YT comment)

the ebay pictures still only show 2 buttons.

At best this is a recent implementation, so it will take awhile to replace current inventory -- probably best to wait a bit before ordering one ...

Take a look HERE. I have also seen them available on Amazon.uk and Amazon.com

    Re: GoPro cameras, etc. ...

the issue isn't the number of buttons, but rather their location.

At about the 23min mark of that YT review, you'll see that the power switch has NO external button corresponding to it.

Does this new case address this screwup ??

Hopefully you'll order one soon, and tell us the definitive answer ...

thanks Tony -- do you have a link to the source of that info ?

How soon are you getting one ??

(btw -- are there any issues transacting and getting ebay stuff delivered to Poland ??)

    Re: GoPro cameras, etc. ...

The 3button case has the power on off as the single button on one side of the case. You don't have menu selection on that side. I guess it would put the activation buttons too close together. Since there is no menu activation, you don't need the up and down buttons on the opposite side. You do have access to the top Mode and OK buttons.

I plan on ordering it next month. Here on Ebay.uk, most of the sellers only sell it with a 3button case, so should be good to go. While it would be nice to have buttons for all the controls, I set thinks up and am more interested in the turning on and off. Sure, Wifi would be nice, but I can live without it.

    Re: GoPro cameras, etc. ...

I ordered one last night. Already got an email that it's been shipped via epacket from China. I have read several good reviews and for the price it's worth a shot. Expected delivery is Oct 16-22. I have ordered items on ebay from China in the past and service, delivery, and product quality were excellent.

Personally, I'm not concerned about the 2 or 3 buttons on the case as I'm not a diver, or a swimmer. And I don't intend to use it in a pouring rain or under a waterfall Wink

I'm a gadget guy like many of you, but I still couldn't justify the cost of a GoPro for as much as I would probably use it. But for 85 USD, why not right?

    Joe

PS THIS is what I ordered

    Re: GoPro cameras, etc. ...

insanely better -- especially the low lux stuff.

But all of it was awesome -- even in bright light, the color and vibrancy was brilliant.

    Want it ...

(hard to justify w/o the 24 fps 4K though ...)
