Idea [I] Making a 4:3 video from HD 16:9 clips

We have a Canon HD10 camera, which produces high quality material, but only in widesceen format.

There are occasions when we wanted to upload a video to a website which did not accept widesceen.

We read the manual thoroughly and also scanned this forum, but it still took us several hours to figure out how to do it.

In the hope of saving other people a lot of time, here is a method:

    1. In Pinnacle Studio 12 Ultimate, Setup, Project preferences, Project format, Set from first clip added to project
    2. Add a dummy clip of the desired format
    3. Add the required 16:9 HD clips, they will come out as "letterbox" i.e. black bands top and bottom
    4. Delete the first (dummy) clip
    5. To get rid of the black bands (called "edge cropping"), for each HD clip
    a) Double click the clip to bring up properties
    b) Select "Add an effect to a video clip" (bottom icon in the properties, looks like an electric plug)
    c) Add new effect, category Studio Plus RTFX, Effect 2D editor advanced
    d) Press reset to remove default effect
    e) Size H 129 V 134
    f) Cropping total L+R=20, for centring L 10 R 10

You can apply the effect to several clips at the same time, but of course only if the cropping is the same.

    A request to Pinnacle.....

Either a) tell us there's an easier way of doing it, or b) make an easier way, please! Smile

So you are producing a full frame, 4:3 centre cut out image, with the sides cut off?

I think that can be done in a few less steps, but there isn't a single step way of doing it.

Set the project to 4:3 SD. Start a new project. Rght click on the HD material and select 4:3 as the aspect ratio. Drag that to the timeline and then apply the 2d editor to expand the clip horizonally (I can't give you a precise figure as I don't have Studio to hand). I think this way might cause less degregation to the video as you aren't having to zoom it in to lose the letterboxing.

BTW, if you use Studio to upload a 16:9 project, it will appear letterboxed in their 4:3 player. That way you don't have to cut of the sides.

Thank you for posting this. I'll be pinning this up as a Sticky.

If there would be an easier way, I'd try Jeff's method above.

rather than the 2D editor try using the 16:9 in 3:4 project plugin thats in Dziedrics effect pack 2

This solution may help me with the Aiptek problem mentioned in another thread.

Is the Studio Plus RTFX included with Studio Plus or is it premium content?

Studio Plus RTFX is included in Studio 11/12 plus. Studio 12 also has RTFX vol 1 as standard. and Rotate added to Standard RTFX, and 2D editor Advanced (including rotate) added to Studio Plus RTFX.

The Dziedrick FXs are premium content.
