    Digitise HDV from Sony HD

    Hi,

We're long time users of 601/Silver/Chrome etc etc etc but have only now had a need to consult the assembled wisdom of the board on the subject of Xe- so thanks in advance for any helpful hints!

We usually capture SDI standard def from DigiBeta or by sonftware transfer from the Sony EX cameras on our Chrome Xe system.

We have just had some material supplied shot on a Sony Z1 at 1440 x 1080i.

We've hooked up a Sony HVR M15-E deck via Firewire.

When we try to log or capture, the logging window allows control of the deck but no image is visible and any capture results in no actual capture of media - not even a blank/empty clip.

We've tried connecting with Chrome in Chrome mode and also in Liquid mode (by clicking the monitor symbol bottom left of screen). Same results each time. We also tried a complete Chrome and workstation restart between modes in case something hadn't taken.

    Any suggestions, please?

Did you change the player settings on the connections tab so that IEEE is the source?

    Hi Lew,

Thanks for the quick reply - yes we did make IEEE the source and deck control...

And you are sure the deck itself is set to output to the IEEE port in the decks menu??

Yes. In fact if the deck is playing back a standard def DVCam tape (or an HD tape with the deck forced rto output as DVCam) then all works normally. It's just when it's outputting HDV that Chrome Xe doesn't see it...

Beats me. Chrome is identical to Liquid and I use Liquid for HDV (from a Sony HDR-FX1) all the time and it works flawlessly.

Re: Digitise HDV from Sony HD

Give this a shot - On your HVR-M15 deck, go to your menu and to the HD/DV select.  Choose HDV , not AUTO (it won't find it in Auto...) and also, when you change any settings on your deck you may have to disconnect and reconnect the firewire before trying the new settings.

To continue with things to try, "if you have done this and still no picture -  you may actually have to "scrub" with the fast forward or fast rewind slider under the monitor inlay.  I almost always had to do that at the start of each session to kick some life into the firewire transfer.

You should, of course , start the tape deck playing before trying the scrub."

     Good luck with that!

    Thanks, Tim.

I'll try that on Monday when I'm back in the office.

    Thanks Manu and Tim,

Tried all of that with no results. As a sanity check I've connected the deck up to laptops running Liquid 7.2 and they both work entirely as expected. Time for a re-install I fear.

    Thanks all.

Re: Digitise HDV from Sony HD

You may have to reinstall, but I normally capture via SDI as you do. To switch to IEEE1394 I have to fool with both the deck settings in the control panel and THEN I have to switch my settings from the Aja board to the IEEE1394 settings addressed through at little monitor icon that sits down on the far lower right hand corner. This has a number of additional effects: video monitor and speakers hooked to the Aja board quit working. When capturing you can hear only through the audio output of the computer and see video only within Liquid. After capture the Aja outputs work fine.

Re: Digitise HDV from Sony HD

Well we can now digitise from the HVR-M15. Sometimes.

We left the system as it was but swapped the displays using the 'eye' icon (bottom right) so that the timeline and logging tool show up on the left monitor and the racks on the right monitor. Now, 2 out of 3 times we can digitise at 1440x1080 via IEEE1394 - regardless of  the Liquid v Chromesettings under the 'monitor icon'.

I have no idea why it works but it does...

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions!

    Best regards,
    Brian
