The Flashing frame - aka the rogue frame - its not random - there's a pattern.

I've just made up a bunch of HDV2 files from some AVCHD footage I took at a wedding recently. I'm happy with the general quality of the outcome, but for one problem.   The "flash" - caused by a rogue frame out of place, occurs in the HDV2 file.  Sad

What's more, it's following a pattern.  When a rogue frame pops up, it's a copy of the frame which occurred immediately after the position at which the previous rogue frame had inserted itself.  In other words, the "normal" frame immediately following a rogue is copied somehow to become the next "rogue".Wilted Flower

What this means, bizarrely enough, is that the Studio clip thumbnail is a picture of the next rogue frame.Huh?

The recurrence of the rogue frame on this file is every 10 seconds + 8 frames (I'm on 25fps PAL), so there's a pattern.  Every 10 seconds + 8 frames - there's a rogue frame

What caused the first rogue frame in the series?  That's one to explore further.

This is one that others who have the flashing "rogue" frames could check.  I'm back to snipping out the rogues. Geeked

Six snips needed for every six rogues in every minute of video?  Do you blow-up the time-line until the scale is detailed enough to see 1/25 second intervals?  No fun.  Would it be preferable to convert the whole AVCHD batch to HDV2 via Voltaic HD (or similar) from the start, and then import to Studio to edit?

Curious that these flashes appear in an AVCHD to HDV2 conversion, as opposed to an AVCHD to AVCHD-DVD cycle.  Do the flashes appear regardless of the input or output bitrates or pixel dimensions?   Do the flashes also mar export to WMV or MP4?

The placements are so predictable I can just slide the scrubber along while I watch the clip timer.  What I'd really like to know is what cause the first rogue frame.  In the file I'm currently looking at the first rogue occurred about 3 minutes in.

More later on the other questions.  In the meantime I'm doing the next AVCHD - HDV2 conversion in S11, to find out whether the rogue frame problem is specifically an S12 bug or an S11 carryover.

I'm interested to know the results, although I vaguely recall some Sony AVCHD users noting the flashes in S11.

Yes.  S11 still has the flashes, so I'll need another program to do the conversion.  I tried Nerovsion, but Studio won't open the Nerovsion HDV2 output Sad.  I don't know why

I see this same problem using Studio 11 to convert AVCHD to MPEG-2, but not on all presets.

    DVD Compatible: no rogue frames
    HD 720p: no rogue frames
    HDV2 1080i: rogue frames at 40, 50, and 60 seconds of a 60 second video
    HD 1080i: rogue frames at 30, 40, 50, and 60 seconds of a 60 second video

Bumping the data rate kbits/sec under Video settings up to 50,000 worked on my 60 second video.  It's hard to say whether or not that really solves the problem though.  My guess would be that it doesn't.  My 60 second video is just a portion of a 8 minute video that I tested with.

Does Studio 12 solve this problem?

The 12.1 patch appears to have solved this problem, has created other problems for some users - described in numerous other threads.  I have it running OK on my XP setup.
