You're a star! I'd already started wondering how I'd install S12 knowing the problems I'd had with the last reinstall when I'd had to install S10 first. I have a very bad memory so I've copoied al your comments above and I'll definitely ask for more instructions when the time comes. Hope your presentation is going well.

New USB Moviebox have Studio Program bundled. Those that are offered as unopened should have either S14 or S15 Program included.

That sounds like it would be a real bonus although I can't see anything mentioned in the specifications even though it says it's new, boxed, and unopened. Does S14 or S15 use the same operational interface as S12, i.e. unlike S17 which I think you once said is a totally different programme?

S14/15 have the same basic User Interface as S12 but with Black Skins, with some additional Features & Album that scrolls rather than turning pages.

I've never had either & hate Black Skins with pastel colo(u)red script & Icons. Most  of the current Crop of Video & Imaging Editing Programs per se, have gone to Black skins, because the Software Developers assume they look sophisticated & Professional-looking. Just another Marketing ployIndifferent.

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12

I've now exhausted any possible advice from other knowledgeable people I know and there haven't been any more comments on my basic PC spec from Forum members so unless anyone has anything to add I think it's now time to consider ordering it from PC Specialist.

I'll go without any additional graphics card (I'll stick with the GPU) and I'll also go with W7 Professional 64Bit and Office Home & Business 2013.

    Any final comments from anyone?

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12

An update. The new PC is being built and should arrive next week. In the meantime, the MovieBox just arrived. As Pete said it has come with an S15 disk (although S14 instructions). The advantage is that as its a totally new programme (not an upgrade) so if I decide to use it on the new PC I won't have to worry about the previous S10 + S12 upgrade downloads but the interface actually looks quite different to my S12. As it says there's no need to remove older versions of Studio (I currently have S10 and 12 installed) I'm inclined to install it now and have a closer look - any possible problems?

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12

What version is it? The (basic) HD version will be short of a few features (overlay track, motion titles, Blu-ray burning possibly). Ultimate is the next version up.

There are a few new features in 15 from 12, but only one part of the interface is majorly different - the Importer. There are two titlers and the Classic titler will be the same as in 12..

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12

It's just the HD version by the look of it. That's all that's shown on the CD. Does that mean it will have fewer facilities than my S12 Ultimate?

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12

Yes Sad and it's not just the eyecandy. I'm fairly sure you won't have an overlay track.

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12

From earlier comments I presume I can just connect the MovieBox as it is to either my FireWire card or a USB2 and immediately download video from my analogue and digital cameras using my existing S12 programme whilst I'm waiting for my new PC? In other words, I assume I don't need to install S15 to use the MovieBox.

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12

Yes, but the firewire connection can't be used for connection to your PC. You can only connect the moviebox to the PC by USB.

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12

Earlier I received Movie Box bundled with S15. I’ve now received my new PC and installed most of the old programmes I need so I’m now ready to install Studio again. As suggested, I’m asking for more advice first.

To recap: my S12 Ultimate is an upgrade of S10+ and the last time I did a reinstall of S12 on my old XP PC I had problems. Part way through installing S12 you’re told to use the shift key to replace the S12 CD with S10. That sounds simple but there are many combinations - ‘Shift’ then remove and insert S10 whilst still pressing shift - remove S12, then press ‘Shift’ and insert S10 (then lift shift or continue to hold etc. etc.). After 2 attempts which didn’t work I removed all Studio elements, installed S10 completely, and then upgraded it with S12. However, I understand that whilst S12 should work with W7, S10 may not, which looks like a major problem.

To add: I had been trying to download old analogue tapes through my DC10+ card whilst I still had the old XP PC because I understood I couldn’t use that card on my new PC but I had problems so when the MB arrived I decided to try it out (I’d bought it specifically for the new PC). I was quite happy with my S12 so decided to just use the MB first. I couldn’t see any reference to software for it in the instructions or on the S15 programme disk so I plugged it in to a USB. The PC recognised new hardware and asked for the programme CD. It then seemed to install without problems and downloaded tapes from my current digital videocam but I still had problems with my old analogue camera (I now think there’s a connection problem at the camera end). Out of curiosity I then decided to try S15 before the new PC arrived. It’s not bad but I prefer S12. But I then got another problem. Every time I opened the PC I got a message that new hardware had been found even when I’d completely disconnected MB and it's cable! Whatever I did I couldn’t get rid of the message. It didn’t matter if I inserted the S15 CD or went on line, I still kept getting the same message. Later I found a very small italic sentence saying you must install the software before connecting MB! I definitely want to avoid that message with my new PC so it seems I must install S15 before I can use MB even if I don’t want the programme. Incidentally, I still got audio distortion in the time line of newly downloaded video using the MB and S15.

So, my dilemma now is this, my preferred Studio choice would be S12 Ultimate with all its extras, plus my earlier purchase of Hollywood FX Plus 4.5, and if possible, my S10 Bonus pack, but I can’t see how to install this if W7 doesn’t accept S10. I also need Movie Box but it would seem that I must also install S15 for that to work properly.

Perhaps my only choice will be S15 plus MB. That’d be a shame and I’d lose some of my Ultimate benefits, but if that's the only option can I keep my S12 Ultimate extras, my Hollywood FX and the S10 Bonus pack?

Here is a video tutorial I made on how to install Studio 12 without a previous version of Studio in your computer.

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12

Thank you both for your advice.

Regarding the video tutorial, I followed that process with my previous XP install but had a problem when it came to using the 'shift' key and inserting the S10 CD. Instead of working the way you describe (and I expected) when I inserted the CD it simply started to install S10 which I didn't want. That's why I wondered if it mattered what sequence you used with 'shift' and inserting/removing the CDs.

    i.e. - shift/remove S12 CD/insert S10 CD/keep pressing shift

    or - remove S12/press shift/insert S10/release shift  -  etc. etc

Or maybe it shouldn't matter what sequence you use. I have a wireless keyboard and wondered if that might have caused a problem, i.e. perhaps the shift key doesn't work whilst a programme is being downloaded.

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12

The shift key should be pressed once you insert the previous verson of Studio before it can be detected (autorun) in your computer.

i.e. - Place disc in your computer tray and press the eject button so disc can be inserted. Once inside press the shift key and do not release it until you get the instruction to enter the old activation key (Studio 10 or Studio 11 Activation Key).

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12

Unfortunately, I still haven't been able to install S12.

I followed the tutorial but when I tried to install the S10 disk it started to install that programme even though I used the shift key as you described. I tried a number oif times withiout success. It worked exactly as it had done when I last installed Studio on my XP computer. I'm still wondereing if my shift key works under those circumstances although it works in all the other programmes - Word, Excel etc.

In the end I let it run as far as I could including the insertion of my S10 activation key, hoping that would succeed. Although I kept getting messages at various stages saying the programme was incompatible with W7 it did install up to about 80% of disk 2 before it stopped. Hoping S10 had at least been registered by then I then tried S12 again and at first everything seemed OK until I got a message like 'another programme has not finshed installing' and it wouldn't let me go any further.

    Any more ideas please?

    1)

    incompatible with W7
    &
last installed Studio on my XP computer

Presumably you now have your new PC up & running, Mike ?

    2)

Although I kept getting messages at various stages saying the programme was incompatible with W7 it did install up to about 80% of disk 2 before it stopped

All S10 Versions prior to S10.6 need S10 Vista (Same as W7) Installer Pinnacle Free Download as a pre-requisite to Installing S10 Program.. It may no longer be available (However, Ramon's very good at finding & Linking to stuff).

S10 Disk 2 is a Content DVD which has it's own Installer., Therefore you can chose not Install it, when requested to do-so. Did S10 Installer roll-back the complete Installation when it reached 80%

Since it seems that S10 Program might have Installed, W7 may have automatically Installed it in XP Compatibility Mode. Check Start / All Programs & Start / Search / Enter; "Programs" / Control Panel ./ Programs & Features. If it's not there, try Installing S10 Program only.

    Attachment: autoplay.jpg
Why don't you just turn off Autoplay in the control panel? Then S10 won't try to install itself when you insert the disc. It means when you first insert the S12 you will specifically have to run the Welcome file on the disc, Or have you tried this already?

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12

Yes, I have my new W7 PC and gradually getting used to it. It's ceratinly a lot quicker than my old one.

I've checked and at least some of S10 has been installed - see below. I tried clicking on S10 but it just said not compatible with W7 again. I presume I should remove those items before making any further attempts to install S12?

My settings for Autoplay are 'Ask me every time' and from memory I think I must have checked the '.exe' file for S10 when the prompt box came up because it didn't automatically start, nor did it go to the registration box as I expected.  Would it work if I checked on 'show folder' instead. And either way, what should I then select to get to just the S10 registration box?

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12

Set it to take no action. You don't register S10, install it or anything - the S12 installer just wants to see the disc. When it does, it may ask you for the s10 serial (from memory) then it will ask you to swap the discs back and continue to install S12.

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12

    Something weird's happened.

I did as you said and then tried installing S12 but although the DVD drive light came on and you could hear it spinning nothing happened. I went to 'Computer' to open the programme from there and the DVD wasn't shown at all. I checked Device Manager and it was shown there so I checked the driver for it and that showed as the latest but it still doesn't seem to be working properly.

I've tried resetting Autoplay and restarting the PC twice but it makes no difference. Nothing will work in the DVD drive.

Re: ADVICE WANTED FOR NEW W7 PC FOR S12

I have found a message on the Device Manager which may be relevant and I've shown it below. If this relates to anyhting I've done recently then that can only have been when I removed the Pinnacle/Studio folder.
