    Re: unresponsive

At no point in this thread has anyone suggested the OP opens the task manager and reports on CPU useage, and in particular which processes are dominating CPU usage. Given the original description of what is going wrong, I'd suggest that blaming a PSU for being underpowered is clutching at straws.

I experience similar symptoms on my laptop. More often than not, either Importer.exe is using 97 cycles even though I havent imported anything, or a scvhost process is running, apparently doing nothing, at 99 cycles. I yet to have the time, patience or skill to track down the root cause, but I'd suspect that a 14.1 patch might be the answer Wink

    Re: unresponsive

I get the impression that the whole of the program is running very slowly or seizing. Hence if a 14.1 patch, then what are you going to patch.

To me , the cause appears to be something a bit more fundamental. I made a simple observation that the power supply appeared to be underpowered compared to the computer spec. It was not meant to be the majic cure but one straw amongst possibly many that could be investigated. Sure, we do not have much information. What operating system for instance. Studio 14 works fine (bar a few problems ) on W7 but is a bit of a pig on XP as I am sure you will agree. The supplied drivers ought to work but upgrading willy nilly to something which was designed possibly for a revised hardware spec is most likely not the answer. Are other programs slowing down. Maybe Studio is the only program intensive enough to show this. And so the list goes on. You know as well as I do that to be of any practical help we need as much information and feedback as we can get. Only then can any sort of diagnosis be attempted.

It was actually dcgnmm who had the 350w PSu so let us get away from that subject and back to the threads proposed by JKoch.

You have a brand new computer so presumably have not run any video editing software on it apart from S14. If you could run an earlier version it would help to isolate whether the fault? lay within Pinnacle or elsewhere in the system.

If the fault lies within the system then you could install another operating system in a dual boot configuration (try Win7 which will download its own set of drivers) with S14 on that. You will of course not be able to run S14 and the rest of your software at the same time. If S14 still fails to run properly then a hardware fault has to be a possibility.

This is a very broadbrushed strategy which hopefully you will not need to do but is worth considering. Others may think differently or come up with other suggestions. One of these, as jjn suggests, is to make as many performance checks as you can using the task manager and other tools and hopefully locate the trouble that way.

    Keep us informed

    JKoch:

Without using the Motion Titler at all, do you have the same trouble with Studio 14?  Is that the #1 wreck-all jinx?

Do you also have Studio 12.1?  Does it yield a better result?

The money spent on S14 is gone.  If you get it back, peace be upon you.  It may take Pinnacle weeks or months to issue a corrective patch.  Since there is no "known issues" posting in the Knowledge Base, I'd not wager it will come soon or be comprehensive.

Meanwhile, the money you lose by persistent problems is far greater than the monetary investment in the software.

Your system and needs may be ample enough to support a more advanced software with stronger support.  Consider the Adobe, Edius, or Sony suites, or perhaps even Avid's AMC,

I'm not sure, though, that any NLE works best if the PC is simultaneously used for other applications.

Seems to be the motion titler. I went fron S11 to S14, so i never had 12.1... but 11 works fine still... of course, it doesn't have the REASONS for buying S14! lol

I have the Adobe suite as well but find it much ore complex and complicated than pinnacle, so I went forth with S14.... the other is new software to me with a serious learning curve it appears... after effects and premiere that is

    Marc P.:
PSUs are not created equally, I'm no expert but some PSUs are true rated and some are not. True rated PSUs are capable of holding their ground, some cheaper PSUs give up on peak time and cause serious performance issues and may cause damage to your hardware. It's best to provide us more information about your power supply. But for these specs, I wouldn't run it with anything lower than 500w.

    I have a 750W power supply

Ok let me find your questions - -

    What OS? - Vista 64

Are other programs slowing down? - No, I try to only run the one that I am working on each time... and no other programs have been erroneous

    Did I miss one?

    Thanks

I had S11Ultimate running on it prior to 14 coming out (a few weeks). And it worked fine..... no issues.

When I go to the task manager when S14 starts acting up - - under the performance tab = CPU usage is 1%,  Physical memory is 19%

What should I be looking for there... it seems to me S14 is the problem, not the computer

    Re: unresponsive

I've sent notification of this thread to AVID/Pinnacle - - we'll see what their response is.

    Don't expect much .

No, this isn't resolved. There are two large threads about theproblem growing on your forum. We would like to hear a response fromAVID/Pinnacle.

With a CPU of 1% S14 has come to a standstill and is not doing anything. With lower powered computers it is frequently known for Studio to be 'not responding' but for the CPU to be still at 100% until it clears. A look at control panel/admin tools/event viewer might give a clue if an error occured at around the time S14 started acting up. Otherwise I do not know what else to suggest.

I see that you have been in contact with support. Good move. The more people that do this informatively, the better.
