Let me describe the procedure I followed to get SmartSound working on S+12.1U  (I'm using Windows XP SP3 and I have S9.4.3 and S+10.8 also installed):

I went to the SmartSound web site (http://www.smartsound.com/support/updates.html?product=pinnacle) and downloaded the Quicktracks installer for Studio 10 and higher.  Following the instructions on the SmartSound web site, I ran Quicktracks once to remove SmartSound from S+10, then ran it again to install SmartSound in S+12U.  The SmartSound menu then showed up in the Toolbox of S+12U but I could not access the SmartSound libraries.  The program asked me to put the S+12U CD in the drive.  I did that but it just hung and didn't complete the install.  I went back to S+10 and opened SmartSound.  It asked me a question about exanding the files and I answered "yes."  After that finished the SmartSound libraries magically showed up in both S+10 AND S+12U.

 Hope this will be helpful for others confronting this problem.

I dont have any previous versions of Studio on my machine (deliberately, because I am fearful of problems). I only have a clean S12 Plus installation with the latest patch, on a clean machine XP SP3 with little else on it. Under desperate circumstances I could network my new machine to my old machine which has Studio9 on it. I have orginal Studio 8 and 9 disks. I have never seen Studio refer to the terminology "Quicktracks" in any Studio Manual. I have no knowledge of Smartsound terminology or usage outside of Studio, (although it would appear that "Quicktracks" is what Smartsound calls its music tracks).

I have 3 Smartsound CDs that I want to load up and I want Studio 12 to recognise them and use them. Ideally I seek simple step by step instructions with some (brief/helpful) explanation (if possible) to make Smartsound CDs be recognised and useable within Studio12.

I am hoping a Pinnacle or Smartsound representative will respond, but anybody's response is welcome.

I have 3 Smartsound CDs that I want to load up and I want Studio 12 to recognise them and use them

1) Launch S12

2) Click on the Audio Tool Box Icon

3) Click on the Music Tab, in following "Pop-Up"

4) Choose SmartSound in Source "Drop-Down" (If it's showing).

5) Insert your SmartSound Cds consecutively & choose add to Hard Drive (or whatever shows in Installer "Pop-Up")

6) SmartSound "Owned " should appear in Source "Drop-Down"

7) Select Library Radio Button

8) All of your SmartSound Cd's  content should then show.   

Thank you very much colour - I really appreciate your reponse and express my gratitude - excellent instructions.  I have a problem half way - I get stuck at 4) and dont know how to move on.

Here's what happened >>
1. Downloaded  and installed the Smartsound Installer "Smartsound Quicktracks version 3.0.9.0."
1) Launched S12Plus
2) Clicked on the Audio Tool Box Icon >> Found the background music button, clicked that
3) On the Backgound Music subwindow, where the pulldown menu says Scorefitter, clicked the down arrow and I see -
         Smartsound Music (Owned)
         Smartsound Music (All)
         Smartsound SFX (Owned)
         Smartsound SFX (All)
(I dont know what Smartsound SFX  is, but never mind ....)
4) If I click on any of these I get the following message ----
" Pinnacle Styudio Plus- could not load the audio plugin "Smartsound [whichever one it was I clicked]".  Unspecified error"

So HELP!
What do I do now please?

YES! That is great news! I bought a new PC just so I could buy Studio 12. I loaded 12 and the update from scratch. Then I realized that Smarsound would not work and all work arounds were disabled. But I own 5 Smartsound discs. How will S12 support these? Will there be another patch to restore Smartsound back into S12?
