Multiple linked menus in Pinnacle Studio 11

    Multiple linked menus in Pinnacle Studio 11

    Been using Studio for years - have a penchant for making menus. In fact if I recall, we upgraded from 7 to 8 to get more menu functions. Prior to removing Studio 9 and installing Studio 11 (didn't upgrade as getting fed up installing 7, then 8 upgrade then 9 upgrade!), I was able to make menus linking to other menus - the interface made the linkage very clear when you were editing the menu, showing M2 as the linked chapter instead of C1 for example. It also coloured that link in the colour of the menu (each menu is helpfully given a different colour so you can tell the chapters are from one menu or another).

    Now in Studio 11 it doesn't work any more. When I try to link to another menu, it puts the same menu's link in instead. With only two menus, it does appear to do the right thing - although the interface shows a different linkage, i.e. it shows it linking to itself, but as soon as you have three menus, for example a main menu linking to two sub menus, it will only allow one link in, When you try to add the link to the third menu, it moves the link to the second one - since it calls them both M1 and so I guess it assumes you are putting the same link in somewhere else and so moves it.

    One of the advertised features of Studio 11 is multiple linked menus, but it just doesn't work anymore. Anyone had any experience with mulitple linked menus? Does it work? Am I doing something wrong trying to do it the way I used to do it in Studio 9?

    All help appreciated.

    P.S. I have the 11.1 patch installed already. Help->About shows Version 11.1.2.5231

    Ignore what Studio's menu properties dialogue is showing you....it's broken..

    The links do get set - and go to the correct place. What is broken is the display in the "menu properties" toolbox when the "show menu links" check-box is ticked. IIRC it is broken in Studio 10 too. To verify that the link goes to the right place, click on the button in the menu preview in the toolbox and observe that the wanted "target" menu is shown in the preview monitor view on the right.

    Hi Richard,

    Many thanks for your reply. When I saw it - I tried a few more experiments. I had indeed seen that with two menus, M1 linking to M2 - although it looked like it was linked wrong, it did seem to do the right thing as you said. Having read your note, I tried another simple test with three menus, M1 linking to both M2 and M3 and sure enough it does link correctly. This was odd since it hadn't worked in my project before - my project did have a mixture of chapter links and menu links on the first menu however, so I tried a test with the same sorts of combinations and again it worked. Then I went back to my original project and removed all the links off that menu and did them all again - and now it worked!

    I think perhaps Studio (bless it) had got a little confused - some residual menu links confusing it perhaps - so I guess all I can leave others as advice is that, if you see what I saw - links dissappearing when you add the next one - Richard is right - it does work. Try removing all the links and putting them back in again, and perhaps failing that, delete the offending menu and build it again from scratch - because, although the display shows the links wrong, the rest does work.

    Happy Editting :-)

    Re: Multiple linked menus in Pinnacle Studio 11

    One final thing to note if linking mutliple menus from a single menu - you cannot combine this with motion thumbnails that have a thumbnail set to somewhere other than the point where the chapter is set (i.e. you link to the beginning of a scene but show some other part of the footage in the thumbnail). As soon as you do this - Pinnacle removes all the links to any menus on that menu and leaves you in my original problem state - that of only being able to put on menu link in.  So choose, moving thumbnails showing what you want or multiple linked menus. Clearly a bug but since I have never successfuly reported any defect to Pinnacle and had them accept it yet, I don't hold out much hope. I will try again however and see what they say.

    Cheers
