Is the upgrade version 12.1.3.6650 safe to install without losing SmartSounds?  If so this will be my last upgrade until the end of the tunnel is in sight.

Answer is Yes, for the time being

If you're happy with S12 & have no current problems with it, I wouldn't recommend Installing S12.1 Update. I suggest you read all of the Posts, in all of the S12.1 Threads. Having done that, the decision is your's.

It's likely that "The end of the tunnel", will be "Next Gen", for current Studio Users.

Please see below an official update on Smartsound and Pinnacle Studio:

We are happy to announce that, seeking the best interest of our end users, we have reached an agreement with SmartSound that enables users of Pinnacle Studio 10 software and earlier versions to keep on using their SmartSound content in Pinnacle Studio 12 (and Studio 12.1).   We will continue to offer this ability until such time that we have implemented a plug-in architecture in our Pinnacle Studio software (which we anticipate will be in 2009), subject to the terms of our agreement with SmartSound.  This plug-in architecture will allow third party developers to easily develop plug-ins for Pinnacle Studio, giving the end user access to more content.  Pinnacle Systems will work with and assist such third party developers in developing a plug-in compatible with the Pinnacle Studio architecture.
