Ian, I believe that if Smartsound is removed from Studio and if Sonic Fire Pro 5 cannot handle HDV (*.m2v) video files then we are "up the creek without a paddle" which makes it even more important to keep Smartsound intetrated within Studio.

Pointing out that it doesn't offer a full solution to smartsounds being excluded from Studio 13 is, IMHO, a valid point, but I think Ian's point is that the SonicFire Pro discussion beyond that should have it's own thread.

Yes, smartsound is still working after installing the 12.1 patch. (HFX does not, make a backup of the pixie directory you will need it after installing the patch, to get HFX working).

Whilst welcoming the non-removal of SS in version 12.1, I find it strange that there is still no official word from Pinnacle. You'd have thought that with this thread having attracted more than 370 posts and 20,000 views that the company would be only too keen to tell us, enthusiatically, on this thread, that the company has listened to us and responded to the clear wishes of its customers.

Instead of which, version 12.1 comes out without so much as a whisper about Smartsound.  A grudging concession, perhaps?

Or perhaps negotiations between Pinnacle and Smartsounds are still at a delicate stage, so both sides have agreed to make no further official comment until the issue is sorted out properly? If you go all the way back to the first post of the thread, note the statement

"At SmartSound’s request, and as a result of inability to reach a contractual arrangement satisfactory to both parties, we will be disabling in future releases of Studio current known work-arounds that enabled the use of SmartSound."

Plenty. Start with the beta forum. Best start a new thread if you have any specific you want to ask about.

SS isn't an issue with 12.1 - it's been an issue since it was left out of 11 

Dear Pinnacle/Avid,

Although this thread has been fairly quiet since the release of the 12.1 patch, the issue is not dead yet:

• What about the next 12.x patch?
• What about the next major release ("13" or "Next Gen")?

We still implore you to continue supporting SmartSound. 

Please response here with any updates.  Surely there must be some progress on a decision by now.

I've just bought Studio v12 along. Having owned v8 (worked well)  and v10 media suite (arrrrgghhhh - the trouble I had!), the Studio v12 Ultimate is superb. really pleased with it!!! (I've had SmartSound of course on the previous versions)

It is a pity if the disabling of SmartSound goes ahead, as it's inclusion so far has been a real selling point. SmartSound, I'm sure have also benifitted from the sale of extra cds to Pinnacle Studio owners. Maybe that's the issue..Have Avid management decided they want to rake in that section of the market with 'Scorefitter'? That's buisness, I know, but not good PR at all. Until Scorefitter becomes the definate desirable alternative to SS , the decision, not only negates Pinnacle users current SS collections and freedom of choice, it gives an impression of contempt by Avid toward their customers. Sorry but it does.

Having said this, I've just bought Scorefitter CD's 1+2 anyway and they sound ok overall. I do really like the 'ambient' stuff and also the 'stingers', BUT many tracks sound like your typical midi synth. So far only two cd's? And the Smartsound Sonic Fire editor, I understand, has the facility to also increase or decrease the intensity or mood of the score.

I think it's a real 'plus point' to purchasing Studio, to have access to SmartSound. It's not uncommon in other software... I bought Cakewalk's Sonar music editing software because it has "rewire" which allows it to talk to other software/vst plug ins/Synth Racks. As I say... it's actually a selling point.

I love Pinnacle Studio for it's simplicity of use, price and it's remarkable range of features, I'm sure Scorefitter can be developed into a great asset to have; but to, at this stage, corral people who have loved using Studio, to buy only scorefitter...? ...appears to be, a premature attempt to gain a monopoly with a (currently) lesser product.

I guess it's not easy, but I hope it can be worked out well between the two parties.

I think it is rather rude when so many people have asked Pinnacle / Avid what the situation is with themselves and Smartsound, not to answer.

Avid you have been asked many times what is going to happen with Smartsound and Studio, could you please indicate to us your intention? We have all been very patient.

I check the forum everyday to see if there is any new news on the SmartSound issue, but never any word on which way it's going.

FWIW & IMO, nobody will know untill if & when "Nextgen" Release is announced, whether or not it retains the facility to Transfer SmartSound Quicktracks & other purchased tracks, currently available in S11/S12. 

I have sent a private email to Sharon Morgan, VP Smartsound and Gary Greenfield, CEO Avid to request an update if possible. To date they have kindly answered my emails on behalf of this forum, if anything is forthcoming I will of course post it up.

I'm sure getting a lot of adds from Smartsound lately. Sounds like things are desperate. Can't we all just get along ?

I find it amusing to see the weekly ads from SmartSound.  I am not amused by the fact that they only seem to offer disks that really aren't that popular.  And it really bothers me when I do buy a disk, and there are songs stuck in there that you already have on another disk!
