I have tried creating several new projects.  They render to  MPG just fine.  If I select Make Disc, most of the boxes are greyed out and it says "No disc writer device found"

The only selectable oprion is  "Create disc content but don't burn"  This also doesn't work.

I've re-installed twice with all antivirus, firewalls etc turned off, but no luck.

My operting system is XP Pro SP2 and my burner is a Pioneer.

This all worked fine in S10

From what I have read it is a common problem.

Maybe someone at pinnacle my be able to shine some light on this or at least be able to give you a time when they will fix it.

Its a shame that they dont have a bug board.....

What is the model of the Pioneer?

Anyone else have this?  It is best to post in on place so that the effort is not defused.

We are looking into since there are a few cases.  Also we would like to get a belarc file from you    http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html   Maybe there is a common system config in these cases.

Instant DVD Recorder may be one of those packages that grabs the DVD drive and won't let go insisting that it owns the drive ...  that'd be my bet.

I'm experiencing the exact problems as martyboy26 but I don't think that the Pioneer DVD-writer is the problem because I have a Plextor PX-750A DVD-writer and Nero can identify this drive. And it's also up-to-date in my Device Manager (I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit). That the DVD-drive isn't found isn't such a big deal to me, but if Studio 11 says that you can still make an image...it should make the image...right? By the way, I've also had the same problem under Studio 10. I hope there's a fix to this problem soon, because I've noticed that there are a lot of people who are experiencing the same problems.

Same here with a TSSTcorp model TS-632D DVD. I cold workaround this problem if Studio let met create the video files but that is not possible either. :-(

I can make normal files (avi,mpeg...) but it's the image that fails...Studio 11 just doesn't do anything when I try to make an image... 

For anyone on these threads to be able to perhaps help you, you need to be more forthcoming with information - computer hardware involved, even screenshots and written descriptions of the sequences you've gone through to do your Make Movie (Project Preferences, Video and Audio Preferences ..., the settings used in Make Disc, etc.).

Most of us are not good mindreaders.

Indeed your screenshot shows you have some difficulties.  Studio is unable to "see" your DVD device - perhaps because it is, basically, preempted by some other software such as Instant DVD, AnyDVD, Nero InCD, etc. software thereby preventing it's normal unhindered use by Studio (since the other software may be "in the way").

You might also notice that 0 bytes are shown for "video on disc" which I take to mean it's undable to render correctly.  You might try uninstalling possible "preempting" software, selecting the choice of "always reencode entire movie", "Custom" for the "Video quality/disc usage" and then set the kbits/sec to. say, 5000 or 6000 and the "Audio compression" to DD 5.1 channel.

When you do a render of a project with these settings, you'll be causing (when you click "Create") a render to a folder entitled "Render" (wherever you've caused it to be placed) and within that a VIDEO_TS folder that contains the actual DVD-Video image complete with all its files.  You can play these from the hard disk by clicking on the VIDEO_TS.IFO file within VIDEO_TS assuming you have, say Nero ShowTime3 on your system.  The rendered video should then play.

Please try these steps and let us know what develops being as explicit as possible with screenshots, steps taken in sequence, etc.

Are you able to play from the hard disk using the VIDEO_TS.IFO file?

I have to use the VIDEO_TS.VOB file.

I believe that if you use the VIDEO_TS.IFO (or its duplicate VIDEO_TS.BUP) file to initiate the playing, you get the entire menu and remote control button effects whereas with a numbered *.vob file (VTS_01_2.VOB for example) you do not get the menu action.

The VIDEO_TS.VOB will not help (at least not with Nero ShowTime3 which gives out a charming black flash), but the VTS_01_0.IFO or .BUP can also be used for the full menu action.  Conventionally, I just us the VIDEO_TS.IFO file (habit, I suppose).   But this way I can know that the DVD will not need to rely upon its backup "starting set".  Also, the VTS_01_0.VOB will show the main menu only (M1 in Studio talk).

I always just double clicked the VIDEO_TS.VOB file and let WMP play it.  When I double clicked on .IFO, I got a Windows cannot open this file.  Never bothered to try the select program from a list.

Nero ShowTime3 is a helpful tool for this as (by clicking on the "hammer" icon) you can get a display of the rendered audio and video parameters (which sometimes gives one a surprise if there's been a "cockpit problem").

I tried all that, but the software cannot find the DVD drive, no matter what I try. Obviously, lots of others have the same problem.  It worked perfectly with S10.7 on the same system.

I have the Pioneer 110D with the latest firmware - same story.  Studio Plus does not see it, Instant DVD sees it without a problem.  InstantDVD was not installed at first and Studio still did not see the drive.  Back in the day there were issues with ASPI layers - is this anything to look into now?  Nero is also installed on the system , but none of the Instant-write software pieces are present.  To my knowledge, the drive is not locked by anything else.

Some hardware manufacturers have "idiosynchracies" which serve to lock out the DVD drive recognition on some systems in certain cases.  On another of these threads there was just such a situation with an HPO system.  I'll post a link to if if I can run across it.  Perhaps you have something similar.

This is a custom-built PC, with a relatively clean XP Home install.  All current microsoft patches.  On the hardware side, a 3 GHz P4, 2GB of ram, plenty of disk space in various drives.  One Pioneer 110D.

Pretty much the only thing I did not try yet was deleting the drive registry keys.  The system did redetect the drive (sort of) when I updated its firmware.  I also noticed that the rendering size is 0K, and as a result Create Image did not work either.  I understand that these two problems are probably unrelated, but if the latter is dependent on selecting a correct combination of other options, then this is quite idiosynchratic by itself.

The same problem with a Samsung SH-S182M  DVD/DL writer on Vista Ultimate 

 Alcohol120 and Nero 7 have no problem.
