    Playback issue.....

Thus far, after installing Studio 15 HD ultimate, I'm able to edit, but I am not able to play anything back. Whenever I attempt to plack back, or when opening the Video and Audio preferences, the window says it's (Not Responding).
    My computer specs are:

    Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit Core i7  x990

    6 gb Ram

    GeForce 210 graphics card 1gb DDR2 RAM

Is there anyone out there who would have an idea of where I should be looking to resolve this playback issue?

    Re: Playback issue.....

I should also say that I've been running Pro Tools 8,9 and 10 on this PC for a while, and have never encountered anything nearly as frustrating and confusing as this. Mainly because I've never encountered any problems running Pro Tools...

    Re: Playback issue.....

Not saying it is the problem but why spoil an i7 990 computer by using a GeForce 210 graphics card.

'Cause I'm a cheap ass. A better graphics card would be cool, sure. Any suggestions though?

    Re: Playback issue.....

I should also state that the full screen function doesn't do anything for the preview window. The screen sort of blinks, but then nothing changes.

    Try changing the Screen Resolution.

Have you tried the DEP (Data Execution Prevention)?

With a processor it is a case of 'the bigger the better'. This is not the case with graphics cards however (unless you are a gamer) but Avid/Pinnacle have never revealed exactly what performance is required from a graphics card, only that it should have a certain amount of dedicated memory. Nevertheless if you require an i7 processor for your 1920 AVCHD then almost certainly you need a reasonable graphics card to keep pace with previewing and such rendering as it does. Unless you own 3 or 4 graphics cards and can compare them you will never know at what level getting a better graphics card makes little difference. In fact your choice is likely to be based on the amount of money you are prepared to spend.

So let us take a look at a list of graphics cards and comparative performance.

    http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html

Your GeForce 210 has a score of 206. (off the bottom of the list) which is not quite as good as the GTX580 with a score of 3900.

My old graphics card was a Radeon 9800 Pro with a score of 331. This gave a stuttery preview for HD and eventually gave up the ghost anyway.

The card I bought a year ago when I upgraded the computer was a GeForce GTX 250. This has a score of 1073. I have no problems with this card but have no means of knowing what gains I might get from a better card. It is noticeable that over a period of time a card will gradually move down the list as newer cards are introduced. Hence if I were to buy a card now it would probably have a score in the region of 1500 - 2000. (since prices tend to move correspondingly).

As far as the GeForce cards are concerned, the first number is indicative of the DirectX that they support. ie the 200 series is DX9 while the 500 series DX 11. The last 2 numbers indicate the power of the card. In your case the 210 is obviously a low powered card while my GTX 250 is an average performer. By comparison the GTX 580 would suit a gamer.

Now you know what to look for you can set your price limit and go shopping.

    Re: Playback issue.....

Wow, that's definitely very helpful! I'm more of a sound engineer, so I don't pay attention to graphics at all. I don't play video games or do much video editing, and you're explanation definitely helps me to think about investing.

    Thanks for the help! :-)

    No, what's the DEP?

I tried changing the resolution, but that did nothing.

    Re: Playback issue.....

Well, I checked it all out and it looks like my DEP is set to protect all the programs. I've taken the liberty of turning of protection on Studio, and I've yet to test it. I'll let you know the results.

    Re: Playback issue.....

Well, after changing the DEP, and replacing the sound card with a GeForce 7900 GT/OC, still no difference. Exact same problem. I click play, which causes the icon to switch to the pause but very quickly switches back to the play icon, and the playback window remains black, the entire time. Then after waiting, the program says (Not Responding), and I'm forced to close the program.
This is the same situation when I attempt to enter full screen, or enter the video and audio preferences. Unable to return the software, I feel like it should not be this much of a headache in order to make this software work on a computer with the specs that this one has.

    Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

    6gb DDR 3 ram

    i7 990x processor

GeForce 7900 GT/OC video graphics card

    EMU 12/12e soundcard.

It's not that impressive, by any means, but c'mon. It should not be this hard, and the support team has not done much to get me anywhere close to understanding what the problem could be.

Oh avid.... how I once believed in you!

Did you selected on DEP "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:"

Did you click on "add" and selected Studio to be installed in your list including any other programs that you may be having problems with?

Open DEP and do the following steps:

    1. Click on add

    2. select in "Look in" and scroll down and select Desktop.

    3. Select Pinnacle Studio XX (if you have more than one, select one at a time and place a checkmark in the box)

    4. Select other programs you may be having problems with and add it to the list as mentioned in step 3.

    5. Click on "apply" and then "ok" and close DEP.

    6. Test your programs to see if errors continues or not.

    Re: Playback issue.....

Ok, wow. Looks like the rendering is really slow, but it appears to be working now. Not sure what helped. I'm sure it was all the suggestions, and going over things, but not sure WHAT specifically. Thanks for all your help!

    Re: Playback issue.....

I have read on previous posts that if you render SD videos, the rendering should be quite fast.

If you are rendering HD videos, then the rendering will be slow.

    Re: Playback issue.....

Hmmm, I'm not sure on how to do that, plus I've got a new issue. Videos that I bring into the session are glitchy and slow looking, but the sound is good. It looks like it's missing frames or something. I'm not seeing anywhere that I can manage the playback settings, framerate or anything like that.
I really appreciate your help thus far, but I'm very near to success here! Could you spare just another morsel of knowledge?

    Re: Playback issue.....

Well, what else can I tell you???

Disconnect your internet while doing a project and don't use your computer to do other things besides Studio. If you are doing a project just let your computer alone until it finishes. Delete all auxilary files before starting a new project.

    Anyone else has more ideas????

    Re: Playback issue.....

Well, apparently the issue only occurs for mp4 files. You don't have to tell me anymore, but as long as you're willing to answer questions, I'm willing to hear them! :-)
