Studio 14 HD & Double-layer DVDs
I find that Studio 14 HD cannot recognize the presence of a double-layer 8.5gb DVD in an external USB Pioneer or LG DVD DL burner. (I thought the LG was defective; returned it & got the Pioneer). Studio omes back with an insert blank or adequate capacity disk message. Roxio 9 will burn 7+gb of data files to a DL disk on the burner, so it probably isn't a burner issue. I've tried both Verbatim & Memorex DVD+R DL 2.4x DVDs. I did set Studio for the correct drive and 8.5gb. I have Studio 12 installed on another computer and get the same result . Any suggestions?

Re: Studio 14 HD & Double-layer DVDs
Precisely what size is your disc image in GB? If you cut the bitrate enough to reduce the image size to 7.3 GB or smaller, do you get the same message? Perhaps Studio and Roxio have different ceilings for what they specify as "available space."
DVD+R DL burning is fickle, no question. However, it's not easy to assign the problem to Studio per se. It is not the case that Studio 12.1 simply cannot "do" DLs.
Using Studio 12.1, my experience is:
- Matshita BD burner (2007 firmware): Likes Sony and Verbatim. High failure rate with TDK. Zero success rate with any Memorex purchased since early 2007.
- NEC DVD burner (2006 firmware): Likes Sony, Verbatim. 70% success with TDK. 35% to 50% success with Memorex.
I've not used Nero or Roxio to cross-check the burners and media brands with different software. However, the Windows DVD Maker that accompanies Vista failed with the Memorex DLs in 2007, but accepted some Staples ones. Staples no longer sells DLs in its stores, perhaps because (using the same source as Memorex), it had to issue too many refunds to disgruntled customers. Memorex recently changed its labeling decorations, but I'll not venture to buy that brand. Even at half price, the problem with fails and defects is unbearable. The issue can't be firmware, if the same burners accept other brands.
Your problem might be due to the features of the project in question (image size, perhaps). If you do another project of perhaps somewhat smaller size, and encounter the same problem, that might entail other issues.
Meanwhile, I seldom have trouble with any make of SL DVDs or BD-SLs, and all four BD-DL 50gb discs burned to date were successful.

Re: Studio 14 HD & Double-layer DVDs
Windows Explorer shows image size as 4.17 gb. Apparently, when recorded, a video takes up more room, becuase if it were to try to record this on a single layer DVD at reduced quality, it comes up as 82%. Maybe I should try DVD-R DL???

Is that other computer using the same external Pioneer drive?

Re: Studio 14 HD & Double-layer DVDs
Yes. I just got an e-mail from Pioneer that said, "If you use two versions of the program and they have the same problem it could be a problem with the way the software is identifying the media. If it was a problem with the drive it would have had the same problem when using Roxio." Verbatim sent an e-mail saying "As DVDs are not recognized as being blank or recordable we request you contact burner manufacturer in order to update latest firmware on the burner." I am checking the currency of the firmware edition now. I should also add that the desktop has a Pioneer 109 internal drive, which gives the same result. I should mention that on the Setup Options window, under "Media Type," Pinnacle does show the correct media, whether 4.7 or 8.5gb.

Re: Studio 14 HD & Double-layer DVDs
This could be a conflict between Roxio and Studio. They each want to take charge of the DVD burner at the same time. If this problem persists, you may want to try deleting Roxio, and do a repair install of Studio. If the problem is fixed, you can reinstall Roxio. Studio likes to be the first one installed. (And welcome to the forum. )

If Roxio is not running, and I have set msconfig not to start the Roxio CReator programs, why would it be vying for the drive?

I really don't know. Probably something to do with messed up registry entries and ASPI drivers.

Look for a Roxio service that could still be loading.

Re: Studio 14 HD & Double-layer DVDs
In addition to the events I noted before, three times I have been able
to get 14 to start burning a DVD (or so it says), only to say about 15
seconds later that burning is completed, which of course it has not.

Were you able to run MSConfig to turn off all non microsoft services?

Re: Studio 14 HD & Double-layer DVDs
I'm afraid to turn off all non-Microsoft services, because I know from sad experience that having some of them not running brings the computers to a grinding halt. I'm not a computer guru who can get into the nuts & bolts to cure such problems. So I only turn off identifiable servcices. II will look over the list again when I get a chance.
I am going to get a pack of Sony disks and see if that makes a difference.

Which is why a de-installation, followed by a clean re-installation, of your software, drivers (or sometimes even the entire OS) is the safest and most time-saving solution.
If you continue to have problems, with either Sony or Verbatim DLs, try some of the other solutions, or an alternative burner, before you end up with too many "coasters."

I know that all systems vary from one to another. But dealing with a 2 year old OS on a P4 system with 512mb of memory platform, has forced me to run it with everything turned off. All non microsoft services and startup programs are disabled and have not ran into any problems so far. Maybe a few programs here and there, but nothing that crashes the os or prevents it from running. This is my office pc that im talking about by the way.

Re: Studio 14 HD & Double-layer DVDs
I just upgraded to Studio 14 and seem to be having similar problems when trying to burn to a DL 8.5GB DVD.
My system has two DVD burners: Drive F: is a regular DVD RW burner (4.7GB); Drive G: is a DL DVD RW burner (8.5GB).
I created a disc image (about 6.7GB size), then went to "Make Movie" and, under "Settings," selected the internal DL DVD burner (drive G) which Pinnacle identified correctly.
Everything looks good, but when I click on "Make Disc," it immediately says "Writing Leadout" and ejects the disc, stating burning is complete. Oddly, the setup then tells me the DVD burner selected is drive F:.
I've reset the burner to drive G: several times, but always get the same results. No problem when burning a 4.7GB DVD, only when I try to burn a DL DVD.
I've burned several DL DVD using the standard Microsoft MoveMaker and DVD-Maker. Any suggestions?
Thx

Re: Studio 14 HD & Double-layer DVDs

After or before installing Studio 14? Same or different brand of DLs?
Any success burning DLs with your prior version of Studio? Which? Same PC with same drives? Same brand and spindle of DLs? This might confirm whether Studio 14 itself were a likely culprit. One might assume (correctly or not) that the disc creation features are what changed least between Studio 12.1 and 14. Only one of the program writers would be able to confirm.
Were you operating "Make Disc" after independent creation of the disc ISO or VLB?
Sorry if these are questions, not answers. But they are probably the issues you must pursue. If you don't stumble on an explanation, a workaround might be to export your content to file, then import into the DVD-Maker for disc creation. Alternatively, some use Nero or similar utility with disc creation features.
The obstacle to trouble-shooting DL issues is that:
- They tend to be too big to allow for quick creation of dummy projects to test disc results.
- There are no re-writeable DVD DLs to spare the waste.
- Different brands have decidedly different fail rates (whatever the reason).
- Burners and their firmware present another variable in the matrix.
- Each individual project can have internal rendering issues that compound the diagnostics.
Good luck.
More broadly, has anyone successfully burned to DVD+R DL with Studio 14?
My experience with 12.1 has been that the media brand or burners tend to make the difference.

Re: Studio 14 HD & Double-layer DVDs
For myself, I only got the DL burner after upgrading to Studio 14. Being on a business trip, I haven't had a chance yet to try Sony DL DVDs. I burned a DL data disk with Roxio Creator, after installing Studio 14. I have tried doing the burning in one step, and in creating the image and then burning from that. My burner is an external Pioneer; an LG yielded same results. I've tried the burner on two different PCs, a Sony Vaio & a Dell Latitude
If one wants to try the workaround described above, how should the image be saved? I found that Roxio can't recognize the image that Studio creates for its own use.

I'm not familiar with Roxio, but if it can support ISO burning then that should be the best way.

Re: Studio 14 HD & Double-layer DVDs
Roxio can burn either an ISO file or a Video_TS folder. Although I don't use Roxio often for that purpose, it seems odd that it would not accept Studio output to burn a DVD. Can you describe in more detail what you did to create the disc using Roxio, and how it failed.

I suppose it would. Maybe Imgburn would work better?

Re: Studio 14 HD & Double-layer DVDs
I have burned five DVD RDLs and none of them worked. The project was a 1hr40m video. No big deal, a few stills integrated with picture-in-picture, a few snippets of music added to the sound track. Tried burning the project in HD and normal DVD formats - all times, my PC could not read the discs and my TV's DVD player could not read them either. DVD-Rs burn fine with no problems. My DVD RDLs come from the same batch of discs that have previously burned fine on the same PC (Dell Studio XPS running Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit) using Studio 12.1 Ultimate. This is not a "user error" as I've double and triple checked all burn parameters, space on disc, etc. Looks like a Studio 14 software bug from my perspective.
Let me say this: it totally SUCKS to pay for an "upgrade" that does not work. AND I've wasted hours trying to do something that used to work flawlessly in the earlier software version. I submitted a ticket to tech support so we'll see what they say.

Possibly so. However, it is counter-intuitive to those who might suspect that S14 is S12 with only a new paint job and a horn that beeps instead of honks. Wouldn't one think that the disc burning features would be the part that changed least? If you uninstall S14 and reinstall 12, do you recover the ability to burn DVD+R DLs from the same stock?
