Director:I suspect nextgen is simply varporware, like duke nukem forever, lots of talk but nothing really happening.
Only the developers at AVID know for sure if something is, or is not happening with "NextGen". LewS has on more than one occasion said that development is still going on in Munich and "NextGen" should be available for release in 2010.
What information do you have that says this is wrong and nothing is actually happening?

Hey Guys, let's give this speculation a rest. I DO understand how everyone feels, because I feel the same way. Last year I got invited to a screening of a pre-beta of Nextgen. If it ever comes, I don't think it will look at all like Studio OR Liquid.
Of course, its tempting to see Studio as the natural progression that morphs into NextGen, but I think those two lines are diverging, NOT merging into some new super-product. Of course, I might be wrong.
That brings up another topic - ADOBE! I have a long relationship with Adobe, and in one instance their underhanded tactics cost me a job because they bought out our small software company and gutted the technology we had and incorporated it into their existing line. Software companies are known for doing this kind of stuff, and they are also known for deliberately hurting their OWN technology so that something else in their line can take precedence. But in that process, the idea is to outwait smaller companies until they give up and stop producing a competing product.
That could be the Avid tactic - or not. I don't know. But it WOULD be refreshing if a company were to step out and NOT do "business as usual" and instead truly look out for their customers. Face it, current business practices do work, but I believe strongly that a more ethical and open and honest dialogue with customers prior to releasing products will pay bigger dividends than keeping everything secretive and cutthroat.
But that's just one man's opinion.

I may be mistaken but was'nt "next gen " supposed to be out this year. I mean how long does it take, they have made 2 major realses of MC in the last 8 months. I to believe that it is just Vaporware. If it is not than give some indication of the progress, anything is better than nothing or just Man up and tell everyone that there is no Next gen just major updates to studio and MC, why all the secret stuff, does avid think that users can't handle the truth. I mean 2 years is a long time to wait for no news at all.
Just my opinion but the wait is much to long.

LewS:Releases of an existing product and creating an entirely new product from scratch (new code, new interface, new features, etc.) are two very different things. I don't think it is vaporware.
My current Liquid 7.2 does everything that I need for the near future and I for one am happy to wait and see what "NextGen" brings when it shows its head next year. I don't need to speculate and I do trust Lew's statement that it definitely is NOT vapourware.
This NextGen speculation (positive or negative) is fast becoming tiresome to read with no new input possible until some announcement is made by Avid. I suggest that we switch our discussions to more interesting and useful topics.

If my 7.2 would write DVD's in Windows 7 withouts returning a BSOD, I'd stick with Liquid forever. Under the new OS it does everything else, double good.
Any solutions?

Andy,
Since W7 has not yet been released officially, I would suggest to wait for the final version next month and then see what actually works and what doesn't. Then we can start to look at specific workarounds until NextGen comes out (hopefully designed to work with W7 ).
In the meantime, try Hans' suggestion.

Can't write an ISO either.
Through analysis I've determined.... When DVD is clicked the system parses for the correct hardware, etc and immediatly crashes. BSOD. I've traced, I think, the problem to be the Pinnacle ASPI64.dll to be at fault.
Too bad because everything else works so well. Like you say, the final version may have this worked out.
Any solutions would be appreciated.
Thanks
Andy

Yes, clicking the DVD button in W7 AND Vista will cause the VERY old Avid aspi driver to override the newer one. Apart from blue screens this also causes your optical drive to disappear after a reboot. There is a reg edit you can do to fix the disappearing drive but you have to do it EVERY TIME the dvd option is used. The only way around it is edit with L7.2 then do up your DVD with a 3rd party app. Nice to hear there's at least 'something' happening with nextgen, some news from the company would be better though, after all if they've been working on it for a couple of years they should have something to say by now?

DStone:I'm not in a position to try this out, but if it's the Pinnacle ASPI64.DLL file, then I'd rename this file and copy the WNASPI64.DLL from the System32 directory into the Pinnacle directory and rename it to ASPI64.DLL and then see if that works.
Dave,
If this actually works, then you have created a workaround that is a HUGE help. I too am not in a position to try it. Does anyone else want to give this a try and report back?
I posted something back in July. I referenced a Microsoft tool that at least "fixes" this issue pretty easily whenever it pops up, but then of course you have to fix it again whenever you burn a DVD. The tool is called Microsoft Fixit, and can be found at

Dave,
I am anxious to try your solution but a search (everywhere and anywhere) does not reveal either of the .DLL files. Maybe hidden somewhere but.....

In theory, this microsoft support article SHOULD work, but in practice, it does not. That is why I posted the link I did. It DOES work. The other "fix" only seems to be a workaround. But it does not work reliably.
Dave, you can try it (I did) and it might work for you. If not, the other utility will work. It never broke my system. In fact, it cured some other small problems I didn't knwo I had.
Good luck.
