Computer [co] AVCHD editing in Liquid!

    AVCHD tool

How many would like to see some basic AVCHD support in Liquid?

I have been toying with the idea of making a Liquid friendly conversion tool to add basic support for AVCHD in Liquid.  This would be an easy to use tool that could batch convert all of your material into a m2v file to use with normal mpeg2 presets in Liquid or some of my special m2v prests in Liquid.

    1.  25 mbit HDV - used to match HDV footage and projects.

    2.  35 mbit HD - used for high quality and a match for XDCAM EX series cameras.

    3.  Blu-ray.  Native Blu-ray format that is ready to fuse out to a Blu-ray authoring package.

    4.  100 mbit HD - I frame only to preserve as much AVCHD quality as possible.

    5.  160 mbit HD - even better then the 100 mbit version.

    6.  DV AVI - for those with low powered systems.

The tool will also include 4:2:2 chroma up conversion, and multi-threaded encoding.

I need to see if anybody would be interested in such a tool.  If enough people want this I will make it.

    How would this be distributed?

    Cost?

Implemented? (e.g. scripts for a third party product, plug-in, etc.)

Sometimes when I start editing I loose track of time and forget to call my wife. Could it please call her when I'm going to miss dinner? That would be great.

    Thanks

I could make it send her flowers as well.

By the way this tool would be free for those who would like to know.

This format doesn't already work in Liquid? or do you mean transcode XDCAM into 4:2:2?

    Re: AVCHD editing in Liquid!

    Hi

what i mean is would it be possible to transcode XDCAM HD 1920x1080 into an liquid friendly .m2v one of your codecs ?

Because liquid only supports xdcam hd 1440x1080 over xrecieve or import!

    Thanks manu

    AW: AVCHD editing in Liquid!

    Yes, yes, yes, please.

    That is GREAT!

I'm presently using some self-made Auto-IT scripts to convert the HF10 clips and to insert handles. very cumbersome!

    would love to get that.

    thanks for asking

    Re: AVCHD editing in Liquid!

I have been working on capture for a long time and I never could get it to be very stable.  There is a possibility to license a API that may make it work very well but it is expensive and I would have to charge for such a tool.  I'm not even 100% if that would even work well enough so as of right now sadly there are no plans for a capture tool.  I really wish I could do it but it just isn't possible right now.  There was once a chance to piggy back on the directshow version of the mpeg2 encoder that comes with Liquid.  There were two problems however.

    1.  The encoder as we all know is single threaded which means it just isn't fast enough for realtime HD capture.

    2.  The encoder only works if you have Liqid installed.  While this may be fine for most people it doesn't offer a perfect stand alone solution.

The other encoding API that is open source has no way of feeding through capture hardware and Directshow so I can't use that.  That is why the only way to do capture may be to use a commercial encoder which will not be cheap.  I will of course keep searching for a solution but after two years of searching I'm afraid it may never happen.  I'm sorry.

    Re: AVCHD editing in Liquid!

I voted for "Oh Yes!", but was dismayed to see that there were 0 votes for the "Pub" choice.  Are we all editors with no outside life?  A visit to a pub once in a while, whether accidentally through this forum or in real life, should enrich any video editor's life! Big Smile

    Re: AVCHD editing in Liquid!

Oh, you mean THAT kind of Liquid.

Actually, allthe folks who lurk here know where their local pub is, and would never make that mistake.

It's finding your way home after the visit to the pub that is the trick.Beer

By the way I wonder if the person who voted for "What is AVCHD" was spending a bit too much time at the pub.

    Re: AVCHD editing in Liquid!

Since I voted, I've had a couple of occasions where I had very practical need for this tool.

the latest I shot the opening of a new medical facility but didn't get the actual ribbon cutting. Not a problem, a person videotaping for the facility shot it. I give him a call and he sends me an SDHC card. Guess what format? Rather than using the AVCHD > P2 > XSend > rerender method I instead used Microsoft's Expression Encoder to output a 1440x720 WMV file which, surprisingly, imported fine. Some obvious desegregation and very slow but it did work.

I'm serously thinking about buying one of Panasonic's prosumer AVCHD cameras for personal use. I'd love to keep Liquid going.

    Re: AVCHD editing in Liquid!

I personally have switched 100% to AVCHD and tapeless opting to keep only one HDV camera around for awhile to convert all my HDV to digital files then it will go also.  We are now telling our clients we only deliver in DVD or BluRay even our "shoot and ship" clients and we offer them free conversion software from Panasonic on the data disc that converts the material to DVCProHD.  Oh and as the latter infers, we only shoot in HD widescreen; if they want elstwise (ooouuuu, i like that word) they can get someone else cuz the hassle of working with tape has taken use over the edge.

If anyone wants our workflow just give us a shout and we'll advise thusly.  And if Smetved has a plan on how to get AVCHD into Liquid I'd love to see it especially if it was inclusive in Liquid instead of the converter way and/or more control features.

    Re: AVCHD editing in Liquid!

The post on 8/19 was a response to somebody asking me about a capture program to capture high bitrate "mpeg2" video from a uncompressed capture card.  That response had in no way any relation to AVCHD support.  It was an off topic post responding to an off topic question.

    Re: AVCHD editing in Liquid!

Then the question stands. AVCHD is Liquid's bête noire. With a solution it has a second life. Without? Well..........................not good.
