I have a problem which I cannot explain, anyone has any input on this ?

I edit in studio (12.1.3)  (which I have done many times on this machine with no problems) and suddenly studio hangs the machine. The hang is very "hard" disk lamp on 100% nothing (not even CNTRL/ALT/DEL) breaks through. It lasts for several minutes and then suddenly the machine is released. The only action in Studio I can relate it to is using the menu track it seems to come when I put something there.

I think I have tried everything but if someone has a suggestion I will happily listen

I have tried:

running Studio repair install

Running studio in safe mood (works fine but no change)

starting wih all startups disabled (MSconfig)

 

My best suggestion is to do a clean uninstall/regdelete/reinstall, just to get that out of the way.

Thanks , I would have done so but the problem showed istself to be a hard disk error, after a fortningth it became so obvious that I had to change the disk. But it is interesting how such an error shows up in a specific function in studio, and no error indication on scanning the disk for errors,.

let me also say that I find studio 11 and 12 to be very much more stable than eny previous version. Also you have polished the install/reinstall procedures a lot so now it can be done with a certain amount of hesitation not as before when it was a real pain in the neck

I still have problems so if anyone has sugestions I am grateful. I have cleared out all and reinstalldéd studio 11 and 12 (I cannot get the studio 12 installation to recognise my studio 11 disks) .

I think the problem is associated with a project that in essence is a large photo album ( about 800 jpeg pictures, about 900 MB of files )

When i open this project all is ok but as soon as i try to do edits in it the system hangs as described before.

are there any known limits in this area ?

other projects of a more "normal" form work but it seems as if studio sometimes has problems if the helpfiles from the photo album are there, if I delete all help files and work with video projects I see no problems, but if I open the photo project ,let it compile and then swithch to a video project i see sporadic hangs, but nothing like what i see whan I edit the photos.

anyone have any suggestions or comments ?

 

Hi Lars,

I would assume that these photos are also in hi resolution Jpeg. Try trimming the number of photos in half, or to something that your system could find manageable, then create a new project with other half number of remaining photos.

another project using video + just a few pictures hang the same way, but projects with no pictures at all work fine.

Photos are 2048*1536

 

but I still believe that there is a hardware error, windows keeps logging an Atapi error Id:11 when this happens. So I am going to see if that can be sorted out. But it is interesting and might be helpful to pursue the fact that these errors only come when there are pictures in the project, and I cannot provoke them with any software other than Studio

Are you importing your photos directly from your camera onto Studio? Or do already have copies of them on your local disk?

yes all files are on local disks

Are you zooming into these images? Try to resize the photos to something a bit more digestible by Studio, say into the same resolution as your target format for the video.

I suppose I could but its a lot of work. I have a project I created and compiled about a year ago which then worked fine and it actually contains a scanned picture at 21000*4000 pixels. This worked fine then !  ( am not opening it again now, I dont wnat my system to hang)

I am freezing studio for a while (I do not have any urgent projects) and trying to eliminate the hardware error (there is a disk controller error somewhere, it does not create disk errors but it logs in the windows logs) Disk errors are easily diagonsed but does anyone know of a tool to provoke and test the disk kontroller ? (logs as Atapi errors)

Once this is fixed I will retry studio, and I hope that the problems will have gone then. I will let you know the results.

Have you done this yet:

Go to: Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Event Viewer / System & Link to MS Error Message, for Disc Atapi Errors.

Plenty of those here, for an Internal SATA Backup Drive. I've temporarily Disabled it, via Device Manager, untill I can figure-out what's going-on. Now Backing-up to an external Drive.

seems similar to the errors I see logged but also Studio freezes when they come. I actually had Windows Moviemaker freezing the machine yesterday with a lot of errorts logged on the c: disk. after a hard reboot and running CHKDSK there were no faults on th disk.

Therefor i believe the problems are in the disk interfaces not the disks and will try to pursue them

If you used to do the same kind of project before and that it worked, you maybe dealing with a service or startup program that's causing a conflict. Try a clean boot.

mAs I said before I have tried;

 sconfig killingall non microsoft startup objects

enditall doing a radikal kill all

booting in safe mood

in all casesstudio runs and in all cases it hangs when there are pictures

The pc is now in for service (I still believe it is a hardware error that for some reason only studio hangs on but I did manage to get a very similar hang in windows video maker so it might be dependent on something like large input files +some special disk processing) 

I shalll test again after the service and see what I can report 

Does the service include getting a OS reinstall?

Have you tried re-installing the drive controller's driver? Just an idea.

I have done reinstalls of all Pinnacle software, run in isolated modes (even down to starting in safe mode) and after a similar problem even changing the mother board. Nothing else protests except pinnacle

NOTE that it is far from all pinnacle studio projects that are problematic. Projects with mainly video + transitions/menues are no problems. They can contain some photos with no problem.

The real problem comes in a project that contains many (several hundred) pictures. It is however not the pictures per se that create the problem, I started a new project and reloaded all the pictures, no problem but when I add titles to the he pictures as menues Studio hangs. Also if I take the "clean" picture project and add effects (I used simple zoom efects) in studio it sometimes hangs. This corresponds with the general feeling i have from working wiht the problem project that it is when studio tries to compile project that the problems come.

also other project seem to suffer from the project files made in this project, I have taken  to always start a blank Studio and start by deleting all temporary files for all projects, this minimises problems

So can anyone give me any suggestion on how to proceed ?

How many is a several hundred pictures exactly? Perhaps you are pushing Studio to its limits, or you could be running out of Page file.

A short summary

Studio in some projects (in those absolutely reproducibly) hangs the system. The hang is for some reason not getting to the disks as needed, leavint the progrma running it is possible to see that it is donig diskacceses at a rate of about 1/10-15 sec and slowly gets on . Pressing tghe exit button will normally teminate the program. No other program does it in any way reproducible like this altough it might occur in other programs (and then we are talking about 1 or 2 times  a week)

Windows reports errors in Atapi, in a disk controller ,which one seems to be random and looking at the Atapi error on the net it seems to be arather unspecified timing error rather than a true reproducable hardware error

I have

reinstalled Studio, run studio in an isolated system (msconfig and enditall)

for another reason changed mother board

updated all drivers to the latest version

I have not pursued it until now as I was hoping there might be some change with S14, which thee indeed was but not to the better. in the sample project (our nature adventure) opens fine and recompiles fine (if I the temp files) but when I press the play button the system hangs

yes I believe it has to do with my sysem some how but it must depend on studio doing some type of disk acesses that few programs do and which lead to the hangs.

That's strange. Have you tried repairing scorefitter?

It is not a general scorefitter problem. I have projects that use it and they work ok. Also there is a second scorefitter music in the demo project and that does not cause any problems. But if there is a repair procedure for scorefitter I'll run it
